The novel as a profan’s place: parenthesis and break up of the sacral

Abstract

Getting an approach to the novel’s theory means approaching equally to a modern western men. In its core, this paper is aimed to develop an argument which supports said thesis. The point of departure will be the general statements which express the spirit of modernity, contrasting other logic theories and cosmic visions that can have synthesized the ways of human’s being, thinking and acting at other moments in the history of European and western culture. From such perspective, it is expected to be able to give some explanations about what the novel form is meant to, as synthesis and expression of the social, economic, political and cultural processes in the West, and how we can go through it to the wide and clear understanding of problems, imaginary and transcendental items that have marked the western life. Finally, some assumptions will be made in relation to the thesis according to which, the novel is a type of literature genre going to extinction as the present times are not most propitious to the expression of its purpose.
