Construction of a Prototype Knee with an Electronic Control System through Rapid Prototyping Process

Abstract

This part of the prostheses research project carried out by the AVARC research group at La Salle University. This stage is related to the design and construction of the monocentric knee prototype with electronic control system. The engineering analysis based on the definitive model, adjusted to the average ergonomic parameters of the Colombian population and adjusted to the applied loads for mechanic testing according to the NTC-4424 Norm. This process was carried out by combining the traditional analytic design methods with the computeraided design (CAD) and modeling tools, as well as the computer-aided engineering analysis tools, then to manufacture the knee prototype through modern tridimensional prototyping processes based on the CAD design software (CAM technology). The project was developed in four parts: first, the redesign and development of the knee construction methodology; second, the construction of the component parts; third, the redesign and assembly of the cushioning system, using a agnetorheological fluid; and fourth, the construction of the electronic control circuit based on a pressure signal from the load developed in the leg’s support
