Profile of the Librarian in the Information Society

Abstract

Academic institutions in the country—aware of the development and evolution of various professions and disciplines— should rethink, from time to time, their pedagogical approaches. In addition to satisfy the needs of labor market, they must also tend to the integral formation of professionals with human values who can promote the transmission of knowledge and information. The librarian is no stranger to this principle; therefore, his/her professional training should focus on the orientation, criticism, and positive transformation of society. Given this, the article offers a thoughtful analysis that considers concepts involved in pedagogical processes, such as communication and dissemination of knowledge, science, and technology. In addition, it reflects on the basic characteristics of the librarian’s management tasks, to establish a social appropriation of knowledge, which is closely related to decision making and public participation in general
