Lesbian, deaf and deaf children´ mothers. Construction of identities and a family – community

Abstract

¿How does American cultural matrix with the possibility of achieving the desire to be mothers of disabled children by a lesbian couple and intellectualized wealthy class? What rights forwards this possibility? To those of a sexual minority? To those of a minority made from your disability? There are features of late modern culture is enabling us to constantly ask ourselves’ Why not? Maybe we should take up the question typical of the Enlightenment: Why? What unites these reflections on homo arrangements, assisted reproduction, reproduction of disability, minority rights and culture of late capitalism? Even knowing the debates that can shoot this article, we try to account for these questions from a particular case. Find specific motivation in reading the newspaper article “Deaf and maternal decision,” published in El País in Madrid on April 9, 2002. The incident occurred in Washington and involved a pair of deaf college graduates who chose to have two children via assisted reproduction techniques, selecting the semen of a fifth-generation deaf man, to ensure that children also were carrying the same disability. Consider the problems and debates that this situation puts us in the above referenced terms.
