Abstract
This article exposes some arguments that support the importance of education as a means for developing competences in society’s individuals, who in turn would maximize their contribution to the organizations, and therefore to the country’s economy. It is stressed that, through education, Colombian government can fulfill the commitments acquired with the United Nations Program for Development (UNPD) known as the Millennium Development Goals. Among other things, the article proposes that, if scientific culture were part of the educational process from the first years of education, the future of the country could be more solid, there would be better welfare indicators, citizens could feel more responsible for their future and it would be understood that violence is not the driving force of change.
