A Historical Perspective on Insurance and its Beginnings in Colombia

Abstract

This documentary-style research seeks to analyze the information written about the history of insurance and its beginnings in Colombia, describing its evolution and development in the following four basic stages: the first civilizations, the Middle Ages, the Modern Age and the Contemporary Age. The main objective was to collect, organize, document and systematize, clearly and concisely, all the information related to the history of insurance in the international and national context, seeking to demonstrate the current state of knowledge on this subject. For this purpose, secondary sources were used exclusively, namely books, essays, monographs, theses, insurance and risks-related journals and websites, where risks are understood as events to which goods or people’s lives may be exposed and be affected by a disaster. In conclusion, it can be evidenced that risks have existed since the very moment men became present in nature and knowledge of the subject became a necessity, in the same way as a second language did. In the world of business, to know about insurance is essential; any person may be involved in a situation related to this topic
