Abstract
<p>This essay shows an overview of the competence concept beginning from the perspective of Aristotle, passing through Saussure and Chomsky’s ideas; then McClelland, Boyatzis, Levy–Leboyer’s concepts for work field are reviewed; in order to determine general and specific competences which need to be developed in higher education, and general and specific competences which need to be developed in productive sector. For such purpose it is also necessary to take into account competence concepts and their classification, general or specific made by entities such as Icfes, Ministerio de Educación Nacional, MEN, and Tuning Project for Latin America.</p>
