Prospective of Biotechnology Applied to Forestry Sector in Colombia

Abstract

<p>Forestry sector represents one of the promising opportunities for Colombia, since it can take advantages of all its geostrategic potential in added value generation. In order to identify trends and generate discussion on the topic, 24 experts from different entities were consulted, recognizing consensuses that change business, academic and government decisions for the next few years. These topic-themes were analyzed: importance of biotechnology for forestry sector at national and international levels, use of forest transgenic in Colombia, processes and products to be developed in the next twenty years; genetic improvement of forest species, forest products with potential business, actions to be implemented by public and private sectors, regulating norms to use forest biotechnology; education areas necessary for forest biotechnology. Three possible scenarios for forestry sector in 2028 were constructed based on consensuses, a literature review and authors experience, entitled in accordance with the competitiveness of various cars in Formula 1.</p>
