Correlation between n-value of standard penetration test and shear-wave velocity for clays in Bogota - Colombia

Abstract

Shear wave velocity Vs is one of the most important parameters for soil and rock classification, because it can describe accurately static and dynamic characteristics of materials. Testing is relatively easy and costs are marginal compared with the drills. However, these tests are not extended in Colombia. For that reason, many times it is necessary to use correlations developed for soils with different characteristics. This paper presents correlations of N-value from a Standard Penetration Test, which is widely used in Colombia and all over the world, with S-Wave Velocity from down-hole tests. Equations obtained Vs=91.44h0.291 N0.298 and Vs=99.783 N0.383 are comparable with reported equations from references. Such results are acceptable and useful is Earthquake Engineering field
