Physical characterization of modified asphalt with polystyrene and crushed tire

Abstract

This research presents the experimental analysis of modified asphalt with polystyrene and crushed tires. The importance of this work is the incorporation of non biodegradable waste materials, which generate a high degree of environmental pollution, in asphalted materials used for the roads infrastructure. Soft asphalt, penetration 80-100, produced in the Ecopetrol plant in Barrancabermeja, Colombia was used in this phase of the research. Two modifiers were used: polystyrene and crushed tires, as product of the industrial residuals. The modification was carried out for humid way to achieve a better integration of the modifiers in the mixture. In this study the conventional asphalt and the modifiers were characterized, later the physical properties of the modified asphalt were analyzed and finally the results of the conventional asphalt were contrasted with the modified asphalt. The obtained results were interesting because they determined the optimal proportion of the modifiers to improve the mechanical response of the asphalt in the mixture and to carry out the chemical analysis in a second phase of the research
