Comparison between asphalt modified with polystyrene and crushed tires using two mixing methods

Abstract

This research presents a comparison between asphalt modified with polystyrene and crushed tires by using two different methods: manual and the asphalt disperser. In this study soft asphalt with penetration of 80/100 produced at ECOPETROL in Barrancabermeja, Colombia was used; and as modifiers two no biodegradable polymer residues were used: the grain of recycled rubber and icopor which were added in different proportions in order to find the optimal percentage to improve the mechanical response of asphalt in the mixture. Modification in disperser allowed controlling the mixture speed and work temperature between 180°C and 210°C. Mixtures binding-modifying polymer obtained with asphalt disperser have a higher homogeneity compared to the manual mixtures from the physical and mechanical point of view
