Exploratory study on project planning and control for small an medium size construction firms

Abstract

Construction projects involve great amount of resources that must be well managed to succeed. Management cycle starts with planning to establish operations and actions needed to technologically transform the resources involved in construction. If planning has been carried out effectively, then it is possible to undertake construction control. That allows early detecting deviations during execution and planning alternative actions, thus closing the management cycle. An exploratory study on the present situation for project construction planning and control in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, is conducted in this work. It was concluded that the majority of the construction firms is satisfied with the results obtained in the execution of their projects. However, very frequently, construction firms face problems caused by the lack of a thorough planning, mainly related to delays in the completion time and the promptly materials supply
