Abstract
Knowledge Organization and Representation (KOR) is currently one of the main disciplines of information and documentation science, as it stimulates access to and appropriation of contents found in society, in different contexts and under multiple formats. Under this premise, the paper examines proposals for classification of epistemological approaches, understood as possible ways to build and validate scientific knowledge in KOR and suggests new ways to tackle research in the area. By using a documentary methodology compatible with the rational approach, it is concluded that KOR offers different options to investigate not only empirical or measuring aspects, but also the generation of theories to support practice. It is suggested to venture into the human and socio-historical aspects that incorporate knowledge permeated by sociological elements that would enhance and diversify the theoretical and methodological approaches of the knowledge organization and representation processes
