Abstract
The rapid development of information and communication technologies, poses new scenarios of challenges and opportunities for university libraries. Human beings are at the threshold of the so-called knowledge society, where the access and proper management of information provides the foundation for the success of individuals, institutions and countries. University libraries face the challenge of supporting their institutions to move successfully into the new conditions imposed by society. This implies that the authorities, teachers, researchers, students and librarians themselves need to downsize the role and must fulfill their libraries.
